The Bill Faulkner PhD and ECR Workshop

CAUTHE is pleased to present the 2027 PhD and ECR workshop in memory of the late Bill Faulkner (1945-‐2002).

Background

In an obituary published in the journal Anatolia, Prof. Faulkner is described as follows: “Bill was

the Deputy CEO and Director of Research of the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism and

a Professor of Tourism Management at Griffith University. He was a Fellow of the Australian Tourism Research Institute (ATRI), a member of the Research Committee of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), a member

of the Board of Directors of the Gold Coast Tourism Bureau, and the founding Director

of Australia’s Bureau of Tourism Research. In his academic life, Bill served as a member of the editorial boards

of several international tourism and hospitality research journals such as Tourism Management, Tourism Analysis,

Journal of Tourism Studies, Anatolia, Pacific Tourism Review, Journal of Quality Assurance in Tourism and Hospitality,

Festival Management and Event Tourism, and Turizam” (Anon, 2002).

Professor Faulkner is widely known as the ‘father of tourism research’ in Australia. He was a Deputy CEO and Director

of Research at Australia’s Centre of Co-operative Research (CRC) in Sustainable Tourism. He was a key figure

in establishing CAUTHE and the annual CAUTHE conference, a fixture on the conference agenda

of researchers in Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

The Bill Faulkner PhD and ECR Workshop is held annually and features guest speakers and workshops focused

on pressing issues for PhD scholars and Early Career Researchers (ECRs), especially.

The workshop is aimed at giving researchers transferable skills and knowledge to navigate their academic careers.

CAUTHE Mentoring Programme

In tandem with the workshop, the CAUTHE Mentoring Programme, is designed specifically

to offer PhD scholars and ECRs opportunities to learn from and network with established scholars.
